I started taking water aerobics and range of motion in the water. I haven't exercised in years. But doing the health tracker I saw a lot areas I can change.
During the summer (when I go up to stay with my mom), I take water aerobics at the YMCA. I will say the American Arthritis classes are really good, as are the "silver sneakers" classes (for retired people, but they let me take them because of my health problems). When I am working (in other words the other 9 months of the year), I can't go to the Y (the town I live in doesn't have one and the one I go to is over two hours away), I really miss it. I have to say the water makes me feel so much better (as does the Y's hot tub and steam room). I highly recommend water aerobics.
I've always heard that water aerobics are good for arthritis patients...I wanted to try it water has always been relaxing for me...its just the whole, "get up and actually DO IT", I've been so IMMOBILE for so long, I've become lazy :(
Jayne, if you have a YMCA in your area, I suggest you check it out. I found that the socializing helped to motivate me. Everyone in the water either had arthritis, were doing water therapy for surgeries, or were elderly. Doing these exercises with "the girls" helped a lot. I also found that it was something I could do because it was directed at those of us who aren't have problems. Sandra, the instructor, would tell us not to do it if it hurt and encouraged us. I really think you would enjoy it. I miss it when I am not at my mom's house. it is really good for me physically, psychologically, and emotionally. I think the YMCA has a website and I recommend checking out the silver sneakers programs.
