Prednisone Mood Swings?

posted 37 months ago by dooste
I know lots of folks have mood swing issues when on a lot of prednisone -- anyone had problems while coming DOWN on prednisone?

Just trying to figure out if my mood swings are connected to the reduction of prednisone levels in the body. Anyone ever experienced this?

Prednisone is a very interesting drug. Yes, definitely you can have mood swings and lots of other issues too like insomnia, weight gain, etc. Prednisone while also an anti-inflammatory is also a drug that makes you kind of hyper. It's a type of upper, it makes you jittery sometimes or feel like your thoughts are racing around. It would seem to me that if you are adjusting to a lower dose you would have some sort of symptom as your body is going from one dosage to the next. Your doctor, I hope, has put you on a reduction plan that steps you down from a higher dosage to a lower dosage slowly, maybe every few days? Its dangerous to go from a high dosage to a low dosage without any medium dosages in between. I found then when I was attempting to get to what is considered a daily maintence dose that I wasn't able to get as low as the doctor would have liked. I started to have big problems at a single digit dose. So watch yourself, pay attention to your body and your moods. Stay in communication with your medical professionals also. Good luck and be well.

My mood is always irritable on prednisone -- no matter what stage of the cycle I'm in.  I get really agitated and nervous on the drug.  At night, when I'm really tired, I get up and start pacing the floor.  Plus, it makes me itchy all over!  I usually scratch until I break upon my skin.

Weird, it usually gets rid of the nasty itchies for me but the moods are unbearable coming down off of prednisone.  I know what that feels like.  Most people get moody coming down, from what my doctor said.

Your body goes through some drastic changes when taking the drug so weather your boosted and coming down moods swings, hyper, insomnia are huge.  The best thing my doctor ever did for me was to take my husband aside and tell him that when I have personality changes or mood swings during a boost that it was the drug and not me.  It really helped him understant the effect....

If you dont get LupusNow magazine, do, its a good read for the whole family and friends.  I leave mine in the bathroom everyone uses and I've had my husbands and sons friends ask me questions....

I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis about 19yrs ago and was on 15 prednisone a day. Two yrs later I was diagnose with S.l.E. At the time my two daughters were small and my mood swings were terrible so you know the rest of it. I could not sleep properly at nights and was very depress. Now I am taking 2 a day. Thanks to God I have come a very long way.

Wow. A few years ago I was down to 5mg of Prednisone and having weird mood swings. My doctor also attributed it to depression but maybe it was coming off Prednisone too soon that did it. I'm currently on 30 mg and now experiencing the 'psycho' me that my boyfriend loves so much. :|  It's a strange drug.
